The Squires House is a large frame house
located on Central Avenue in one of Ewing Township's first suburban subdivisions,
Altura, now known as the Grand Avenue district in West Trenton. The house was
built in 1898 by Edward H. Squire who was a civil engineer. During a recent kitchen
renovation a newspaper from 1898 signed by Mr. E. Squire was found in one of the
walls.
The two and one half story house is a Queen Anne of the Free Classic type
which combines the form and details of Queens Anne with classical references
to Colonial Revival. The main house is covered with a moderately steep, hipped
roof, accented with offset dormers containing Palladian windows on the southern
and western sides.
The main feature of the house is the curved southwestern corner which melds
into an onion dome tower with a bronze finial. The house retains its original
1/1 windows set singly or in pairs along the facade. The curved side tower is
echoed by the curved wraparound porch.
From 1902 to 1910 the history of the house in not clear but two mortgages
on the property were listed to Sarah Q. Lewis and to Amy Atlee. Beginning with
the 1906 Trenton City Directory there are two Atlees: George Atlee (salesman)
and John Atlee (insurance agent/land agent). It is likely that the house was
rented to this family until 1910 when the property was sold to Mary Tittenhouse
who owned it until 1927.
